On December 10, 2025, Science, Innovation and Technology Minister Shane Reti announced a NZ$1.35 million (approximately US$780,000) discovery phase to explore the development of a national quantum technologies research platform. The initiative is led by the New Zealand Institute for Advanced Technology (NZIAT), a new public research organization being developed within the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.
According to the MBIE announcement, the discovery phase will run from December 2025 to June 2026, working with researchers and businesses to explore both scientific and industry capabilities and needs. If the process shows readiness for a quantum technology investment, NZIAT will proceed with designing and initiating a quantum technology research platform.
Minister Reti said the discovery process would examine how New Zealand can accelerate quantum technology research to drive innovation, create high-value jobs, and secure its place in the global technology economy. Quantum technologies is the institute’s third major activity, following earlier investments in future materials and magnet technologies in May 2025 and an artificial intelligence research platform announced in September 2025. Once established, NZIAT will operate from a central hub in Auckland with research investments across the country.
