On December 2, 2022, the Quad Critical and Emerging Technology Working Group convened the inaugural Quad Technology Business and Investment Forum in Sydney, Australia. Hosted in partnership with the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) and supported by the Australian Department of Home Affairs, the forum brought together government officials, technology companies, investors, and academics from the four Quad nations.
Australia’s Minister for Home Affairs Clare O’Neil addressed the gathering, noting that the Quad countries “account for about 34% of the world’s gross domestic product” and that with governments, industry, investors, and academics working together, the four nations “can lead the world in quantum, artificial intelligence, biotechnology and so much more.” Quantum was among the critical technology areas discussed during the event.
An outcomes report produced by ASPI recommended that the Quad Critical and Emerging Technology Working Group establish an Industry Engagement Sub-Group to develop a forward work plan. A second forum was later held in San Francisco in November 2023, hosted by the Special Competitive Studies Project.
