Romania’s Executive Agency for Higher Education, Research, Development and Innovation Funding (UEFISCDI) launched the QUTECH-RO project on March 15, 2018, with a budget of 5,287,500 RON (approximately €1.13 million). The complex project, directed by Radu Ionicioiu of the Horia Hulubei National Institute of Physics and Nuclear Engineering (IFIN-HH), was funded under the UEFISCDI’s PCCDI program and ran through April 2021.

According to the project description, QUTECH-RO aimed to develop quantum information and quantum technologies in Romania so that the Romanian research community could actively participate in the EU Quantum Flagship. The project had three strategic objectives: developing research capacity in quantum information and quantum technologies, training PhD students and researchers, and disseminating results to society.

Key outcomes of the project included the foundation of the Romanian Quantum Network (RoQnet) and Romania’s participation in the EU Quantum Flagship. The project director served as Romania’s representative in the Quantum Community Network of the Flagship.
