MISIS University of Science and Technology announced the creation of the Institute of Physics and Quantum Engineering, aimed at training specialists in quantum materials science, technology, and communications. According to a press release from the university, the first undergraduate programs were set to begin in 2024, with bachelor-level programs to follow in subsequent years.
Alexey Fedorov, head of the Laboratory of Quantum Information Technologies at MISIS and the Russian Quantum Center, was appointed director of the institute. The institute was established as part of the “Priority 2030” program. It incorporated more than 10 existing laboratories and centers at the university conducting research in quantum technologies and communications.
MISIS described the institute as addressing a key challenge in quantum technology development: the training of engineers rather than only researchers. The institute’s stated goal was to provide graduates with knowledge at all levels of quantum technologies, from advanced materials to quantum algorithms. Staff also set a goal of establishing cooperation with quantum science and education centers in BRICS countries.
