Saudi Aramco signed an agreement with Pasqal on May 20, 2024, to install the first quantum computer in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. According to Aramco’s announcement, Pasqal would install, maintain, and operate a 200-qubit quantum computer, with deployment scheduled for the second half of 2025.

Ahmad Al-Khowaiter, Aramco Executive Vice President of Technology and Innovation, said the company aimed “to pioneer the use of quantum computing in the energy sector.” The system would initially use an analog mode, with an upgrade to a more advanced hybrid analog-digital mode planned within the following year.

Both companies stated their intention to use the quantum computer for identifying new use cases and establishing a center for quantum research within Saudi Arabia involving leading academic institutions. The agreement built on a 2022 MOU between the companies, Pasqal’s opening of a Saudi office in 2023, and a strategic investment in Pasqal by Aramco’s Wa’ed Ventures during the company’s Series B fundraising round, also in 2023.
