On June 7, 2024, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/78/287, proclaiming 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. Senegal was listed as an additional co-sponsor of the draft resolution (A/78/L.70), which was introduced by the delegation of Ghana and adopted without a vote. The UN Digital Library record confirms Senegal among more than 70 co-sponsoring countries.
According to the resolution, the International Year was intended to raise public awareness of the importance of quantum science and its applications, with UNESCO designated as the lead agency. The draft had originally been submitted by Finland, Ghana, India, Peru, South Africa, and Turkmenistan, with additional sponsors joining ahead of the plenary session.
Senegal’s co-sponsorship followed its earlier role in requesting the initial IYQ proposal at the UNESCO Executive Board in May 2023, making it one of a small number of African states that participated in both stages of the intergovernmental process leading to the designation.
