South Korea: National Assembly Committee Passes Quantum Science and Technology Promotion Act

On May 24, 2023, the National Assembly’s Science, Technology, Information, Broadcasting and Communications Committee voted on 16 bills, including the Quantum Science and Technology Development and Industry Promotion Act. The bill, formally titled “Bill on the Promotion of Quantum Science and Technology and Quantum Industry,” was advanced for systematic development of quantum science, technology, and industry.

According to Quantum in Korea, the act incorporated measures covering research and industry support, technological innovation, commercialization, workforce development, establishment of research centers and clusters, and international collaboration. The bill would proceed to the Legislation and Judiciary Committee and then the National Assembly plenary session. Once enacted, it would provide a legal framework defining government ministries’ responsibilities and implementation strategies for quantum policy.
