Countries & Organisations

In late 2022, the Korean government designated quantum science and technology as one of 12 National Strategic Technologies critical for supply chain security, trade, new industry, diplomacy, and national security. The designation was announced at the first meeting of the National Science Technology Advisory Board, chaired by President Yoon Suk Yeol.

Quantum was classified as one of three “game-changing” sectors alongside AI/semiconductors and advanced biotechnology. According to the Korea-EU Research Centre, the government committed KRW 25 trillion over five years to R&D across all 12 technologies and identified 50 sub-specific technologies for intensive support. Next-generation nuclear energy and quantum were designated as the first National Strategic Technology Projects to be promoted, with eight additional projects to follow by the end of 2023.
