On October 31, 2024, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and South Korean Minister of National Defense Kim Yong Hyun announced the establishment of a vice minister-level Defense Science and Technology Executive Committee (DSTEC) at the 56th U.S.-ROK Security Consultative Meeting. The DSTEC will oversee advances in quantum technologies, autonomous systems, and artificial intelligence within the alliance.
According to The Quantum Insider, the committee was created to explore the application of cutting-edge science and technology in the defense sector. A U.S. Department of Defense fact sheet stated that quantum technology offers strategic advantages through ultra-secure communication networks, enhanced encryption, and sophisticated data analysis. The allies agreed to incorporate quantum technologies into joint defense operations to improve encryption and secure communications.
