On April 25, 2023, the United States and the Republic of Korea signed a Joint Statement on Cooperation in Quantum Information Science and Technology (QIST) in Washington, D.C. The signing took place during ROK President Yoon Suk Yeol’s state visit. Dr. Arati Prabhakar, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and Dr. Lee Jong-ho, South Korea’s Minister of Science and ICT, signed the statement.
According to the National Quantum Initiative, the statement built on a prior May 2022 joint presidential commitment to enhance cooperation in critical and emerging technologies including quantum. Eleven days earlier, on April 14, South Korea had joined the Entanglement Exchange, a U.S.-founded international portal for quantum researcher exchanges. The joint statement committed both countries to pursue cooperation in areas including research, workforce development, supply chain building, and standardization.
