On March 26, 2026, Spain’s Secretary of State for Defence, Amparo Valcarce, received the Estrategia de Tecnología e Innovación para la Defensa (ETID 2026), establishing the technology and innovation roadmap for the Spanish Armed Forces. The 176-page document set out more than 140 research, development, and innovation lines across 11 major domains.

Quantum sensors were identified among the priority technologies, alongside artificial intelligence, photonics, directed-energy weapons, and hypersonic systems. The strategy’s sensor and electronic systems area included specific lines for quantum sensing technologies applicable to positioning, navigation, and detection in defense contexts. The document also addressed quantum-resistant communications and cybersecurity.

The Ministry of Defence said the strategy responded to an environment of technological acceleration and global strategic competition. The document was to be published in the Official State Gazette in the following days.
