On July 16, 2025, Iberdrola and the Basque Government’s Department of Science, Universities, and Innovation signed a long-term collaboration agreement to advance quantum computing research in the energy sector. The agreement made Iberdrola the first company to join the BasQ (Basque Quantum) ecosystem under a public-private collaboration model.

Under the agreement, Iberdrola gained access to the quantum computing capacity deployed by the Basque Government within the BasQ ecosystem, including the IBM-Euskadi Quantum Computing Centre and its IBM Quantum System Two, scheduled for installation in San Sebastián later in 2025. The utility would also collaborate on applied research, advanced training, and scientific dissemination projects focused on quantum applications in energy.

The alliance was part of the Basque Government’s BasQ strategy. Iberdrola said it would explore quantum computing for optimizing smart grids, improving weather forecasting, simulating advanced materials, and accelerating energy efficiency algorithms. The agreement also included support for startups and companies within the BasQ ecosystem.
