On October 9, 2025, the Galician regional government and the University of Vigo inaugurated Spain’s longest terrestrial quantum key distribution line, spanning 120 kilometers between the Galicia Supercomputing Centre (CESGA) in Santiago de Compostela and the Vigo Quantum Communication Center (VQCC). The Galician Minister of Science, Román Rodríguez, and the University of Vigo Rector, Manuel Reigosa, participated in the launch ceremony.
The fiber-based QKD link, developed by CESGA researchers with support from VQCC, was also described as one of the longest such links in Europe. It was funded by the Galician regional government and Spain’s Ministry of Science through the Complementary Quantum Communications Plan, under an agreement between CESGA and Red.es. The system was designed to enable ultra-secure communications with plans for extension to other points on the Galician research network.
The link was intended for connection to the EuroQCI network through the IberianQCI project, which would interconnect Spanish and Portuguese national quantum communication networks. The government said the technology could protect critical infrastructure, government communications, banking transactions, and health data.
