National Taiwan University (NTU) officially launched the IBM Q Hub at NTU on January 17, 2019, with the support of Taiwan’s Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST). The hub made NTU a member of the IBM Quantum Network and provided Taiwan’s academic research community with access to IBM’s quantum computing systems via cloud.
NTU and IBM signed an agreement enabling NTU, its two research partners — the Institute for Information Industry (III) and the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) — and individual researchers from other Taiwanese universities to access IBM Q 20-qubit quantum computing systems from January 1, 2019. A three-day workshop held alongside the launch ceremony drew over 160 participants and featured training sessions on quantum information software development led by eight IBM experts.
According to NTU, the hub’s primary goal was to promote research and development activities in quantum computing and to cultivate and train students for the quantum computing era.
