In March 2022, Taiwan formally launched its cross-ministerial National Quantum Team, selecting 17 interdisciplinary research groups from academia and industry to guide the country’s quantum technology development over the following five years. The NSTC, Academia Sinica, and the Ministry of Economic Affairs jointly announced the selections at a press conference on March 16, according to the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology platform.
After two years of assessment and planning, the government recruited 72 project directors and 24 IT companies to participate in the program. Research teams were organized around four development directions: quantum computing hardware, photonic quantum technologies, quantum software, and application development. Proposals were evaluated on criteria including ambition and feasibility, and final selections balanced each team’s capacity to contribute to Taiwan’s quantum roadmap.
Minister of Science and Technology Wu Tsung-tsong and Academia Sinica President James C. Liao were identified as the two leading figures behind the national strategy. Wu emphasized a shift from a siloed model to broad collaboration across universities, institutions, and industry.
