On November 25, 2024, the Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute (TSRI), a government-funded organization under the National Applied Research Laboratories, announced the procurement of its first full-stack superconducting quantum computer from Finland’s IQM Quantum Computers. The system, a 5-qubit IQM Spark, was scheduled for delivery and installation at TSRI’s premises in the second quarter of 2025, according to the IQM press release.

TSRI Director General Tuo-Hung Hou said the acquisition marked “a key step for Taiwan in the global quantum computing race” and would strengthen the link between academia and industry while laying a foundation for cultivating domestic quantum computing talent. TSRI planned to use the system for educational and research purposes and to pursue hardware integration with IQM’s technical expertise, particularly in low-temperature CMOS technologies for large-scale quantum processors.

IQM Co-CEO Mikko Valimaki described the sale as the company’s first quantum computer shipment into Taiwan and said the purchase would “set the stage for its technology ecosystem to jump start into quantum.”
