On November 10, 2020, Abu Dhabi publicly unveiled the Technology Innovation Institute (TII), the applied research pillar of the Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC). According to the announcement, TII was described as a global center for advanced technology research with seven initial dedicated research centers, including a Quantum Research Center (QRC).
QRC was established with the goal of developing the UAE’s first quantum computer. The center’s areas of operation were listed as quantum cryptography, quantum algorithms, quantum communications, and quantum sensing. TII said the institute would have a defined research roadmap, committed long-term funding, and the ability to make decisions in a fast-paced environment.
ATRC Secretary General Faisal Al Bannai noted that TII aimed to deliver discovery science and breakthrough technologies with global impact. By working with international talent, universities, and industry partners, TII was positioned to contribute to Abu Dhabi’s R&D ecosystem. The institute is based in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi.
