In 2018, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funded 75 Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs) across its full remit, with a total value of over £440 million. Several awards within this cohort supported doctoral training in quantum technologies, according to the NQTP programme page.

Funded centres included the Centre for Doctoral Training in Delivering Quantum Technologies at University College London and the Centre for Doctoral Training in Quantum Engineering at the University of Bristol. These CDTs joined earlier quantum-focused centres funded in 2013 at Imperial College and elsewhere, which were then taking in their final student cohorts.

The CDT investments formed part of the broader workforce development component of the National Quantum Technologies Programme, complementing the Quantum Technology Hubs and Quantum Technologies Fellowships.
