On November 22, 2023, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt launched five quantum technology missions as part of the Autumn Statement, backed by the £2.5 billion National Quantum Strategy. The missions, published by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, set specific outcome targets for quantum computing, networking, healthcare, navigation, and sensing.

Mission 1 calls for accessible, UK-based quantum computers capable of running 1 trillion operations by 2035. Mission 2 targets the world’s most advanced quantum network at scale by 2035. Mission 3 aims for every NHS Trust to benefit from quantum sensing-enabled solutions by 2030 for early diagnosis and treatment. Mission 4 sets a 2030 target for quantum navigation systems deployed on aircraft. Mission 5 targets mobile, networked quantum sensors for critical infrastructure in transport, telecoms, energy, and defence by 2030.

Science Minister Andrew Griffith visited the National Physical Laboratory following the announcement. The government stated that in coming weeks it would work with industry, academia, and investors to define delivery programmes for each mission.
