DOE Announces $65 Million in Quantum Computing Research Awards

On September 9, 2024, the U.S. Department of Energy announced $65 million in funding for 10 projects in Accelerated Research in Quantum Computing, comprising 38 separate awards at more than 20 institutions. Total funding covered up to five years, with $14 million allocated in fiscal year 2024 and outyear funding contingent on congressional appropriations.

The investment targeted software toolchains, control systems, and algorithmic advancements to demonstrate quantum computing utility for scientific research in the DOE mission space. DOE Associate Director of Science Ceren Susut stated the awards aimed to equip scientists with computational tools for new frontiers of scientific discovery.
