United States and Japan Sign Tokyo Statement on Quantum Cooperation

On December 19, 2019, the United States and Japan signed the Tokyo Statement on Quantum Cooperation to advance collaboration in quantum information science and technology research and development. The statement was signed by the acting deputy chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo and Japan’s director-general for science, technology, and innovation policy.

According to the U.S. Department of State, the statement promoted increased engagement through international conferences and events, supported joint efforts to prepare the next generation of quantum scientists and engineers, and encouraged sharing of research methodologies, infrastructure, and data. It was the first international quantum cooperation statement to reflect principles of the Joint Committee on the Research Environment.
