Countries & Organisations

On December 3, 2024, a bipartisan group of U.S. senators introduced the National Quantum Initiative Reauthorization Act (S. 5411). The legislation would authorize $2.7 billion in federal funding over five years (FY2025-FY2029) for NIST, NSF, and NASA quantum research and development programs.

Led by Senators Cantwell (D-WA), Young (R-IN), Durbin (D-IL), and Daines (R-MT), the bill would extend the NQI program from 2029 to 2034, establish up to three new NIST quantum centers, create five new NSF Multidisciplinary Centers for Quantum Research and Education, and authorize NASA quantum satellite communications and sensing work. Authorization for certain NQI R&D activities had expired on September 30, 2023. The bill was reintroduced in the 119th Congress in January 2026.
