On June 7, 2024, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/78/287 proclaiming 2025 the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. Uzbekistan was among more than 70 countries that co-sponsored the draft resolution (A/78/L.70), which was presented to the General Assembly by the Ghanaian delegation and adopted without objection.

Ghana had formally submitted the draft resolution in May 2024, following a recommendation from the 42nd session of the UNESCO General Conference in November 2023. The original UNESCO Executive Board resolution, adopted in April 2023, had itself been co-sponsored by 59 countries. UNESCO was designated the lead agency for the International Year.

Uzbekistan’s co-sponsorship placed it alongside countries from every region, including Finland, India, Peru, South Africa, China, Germany, the United States, and several other Central Asian states. The resolution recognized the centennial of Werner Heisenberg’s 1925 paper on quantum mechanics and called for activities to promote public awareness and international cooperation in quantum science and technology.
