Southeast Asia’s first quantum computing hackathon took place in Bangkok, Thailand, from August 3 to 5, 2025. According to CERN’s Open Quantum Institute (OQI), the SEA Quantathon 2025 was organized in collaboration with Suranaree University of Technology’s Quantum Technology Research Initiative Consortium (QTRic), Thailand’s Program Management Unit for Human Resources and Institutional Development (PMU-B), OQI, QWorld, and Amazon Web Services.
Coordinators and mentors from Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Vietnam participated alongside 24 students, who formed six teams to develop quantum computing applications addressing climate change, healthcare, and renewable energy. The event was organized in conjunction with the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ 2025) and was listed as a pilot initiative of the SEA Quantum Network.
Winning teams later presented their projects at the ASEAN Quantum Summit in December 2025. The hackathon represented the first multi-country quantum education event coordinated across Southeast Asian nations.
