The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) joined the Open Quantum Institute (OQI) as a new member on December 3, 2024. According to an announcement by AIMS Rwanda, the membership agreement was signed on that date.

AIMS operates campuses in South Africa, Cameroon, Ghana, Rwanda, and Senegal. Prince Osei, Lead Scientist and Director of Quantum Leap Africa at AIMS Ghana, said the membership would position AIMS to lead the continent in applying quantum technology to provide solutions to pressing challenges in Africa.

Under the membership, AIMS would participate in the implementation of OQI’s goals of developing quantum technologies with practical applications in sectors such as healthcare, energy, and transportation. The OQI is hosted at CERN during its 2024-2026 pilot phase and promotes global and inclusive access to quantum computing.
