On April 19, 2021, Finance Canada said in Budget 2021 that the government would provide CAD 360 million (~US$290 million) over seven years, starting in 2021-22, to launch a National Quantum Strategy. The budget text also said the funding would establish a secretariat at Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada to coordinate the work.

Finance Canada said the strategy’s stated aims were to expand Canada’s quantum research base, grow quantum-ready technologies, companies, and talent, and coordinate federal action in the field. The measure was set out in Budget 2021: Building an Innovation Economy of the Future.
