Canada awards more than CAD 74 million for 107 quantum science projects

On January 21, 2025, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) announced more than CAD 74 million (~US$52 million) for 107 quantum science projects aligned with the National Quantum Strategy. NSERC said the awards covered quantum algorithms and encryption, quantum communications, quantum computing, quantum materials, and quantum sensing.

The agency said the package included more than CAD 50 million for 39 Alliance Quantum projects, close to CAD 20 million for four Alliance Consortia Quantum projects, and more than CAD 4 million for 64 Alliance International Catalyst Quantum and Alliance International Collaboration Quantum projects. NSERC also said the projects would contribute to the advanced training of more than 500 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, according to the January 2025 funding announcement.
