The Open Quantum Institute (OQI) published its 2024 white paper in October 2024, presenting ten new use cases for quantum computing aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). According to a report in The Quantum Insider, the use cases represented collaboration among experts from 22 countries and were in various stages of development.
Applications included quantum simulations for accelerating antibiotic discovery, quantum machine learning for improving gastrointestinal cancer diagnostics, optimization of urban water leak detection systems under SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), and catalytic carbon capture technologies under SDG 13 (Climate Action). Quantum simulation, quantum-inspired combinatorial optimization, and machine learning were identified as the primary technologies being explored.
The white paper was the OQI’s first major technical output since the pilot phase began at CERN in March 2024.
