CERN Quantum Technology Initiative Enters Phase 2 with Four Competence Centers

CERN’s Quantum Technology Initiative (QTI) entered its second phase in January 2024, following the conclusion of a three-year initial program. According to a Physics World interview with Benjamin Frisch of the CERN QTI management team, Phase 2 would consolidate the initiative around a set of investigations with potential impact on CERN’s high-energy physics research program.

An annual report from CERN confirmed QTI Phase 2 would be organized into four thematic Centres of Competence covering quantum computing and algorithms, quantum theory and simulation, quantum sensing and related nanotechnologies, and networking. Each center would focus on practical impact for CERN, co-development with industry and academia, and expansion of the collaboration ecosystem.

A formal CERN governance document noted the initiative would run for five years and propose an initial ten-year vision for the organization’s quantum technology work.
