CERN formally launched its Quantum Technology Initiative (QTI), a program announced by Director-General Fabiola Gianotti in June 2020. According to a CERN news article published on September 28, 2020, the initiative positions CERN within a global effort to exploit quantum phenomena such as superposition and entanglement for new computing, communication, sensing, and simulation devices.
QTI was structured around four quantum research areas: computing and algorithms; sensing and metrology; communication; and simulation and information processing. The initial three-year program would assess the potential impact of quantum technologies on CERN and high-energy physics on the timescale of the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider and beyond.
Alberto Di Meglio, coordinator of CERN QTI and head of CERN openlab, said the initiative would help structure and coordinate activities with CERN’s community and international public and private initiatives. QTI would also develop an international education and training program in collaboration with experts, universities, and industry.
