In late April or early May 2024, Chile’s Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation (MinCiencia) and the Ministry of the Interior jointly convened the Expert Commission on Quantum Technologies. The commission was tasked with advising the government on public policies and strategies for quantum technology development, with particular emphasis on cybersecurity.
The eight-member commission comprised specialists from national universities and research institutions, including representatives from the University of Santiago, the University of Chile, the Pontifical Catholic University, the University of Concepción, the Federico Santa María Technical University, the Millennium Institute for Research in Optics (MIRO), and the private sector firm SeQure Quantum. A representative from the Ministry of the Interior also served on the panel.
According to a May 2024 account by commission member Paulina Assmann, the body was created to “map out the roadmap for the advancement of this technology, establishing clear strategies and precise regulations.” The commission worked for 120 days on data gathering and proposal formulation, following the model of Chile’s earlier National Policy on Artificial Intelligence.
