On January 1, 2020, Chile’s National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research (CONICYT) was formally replaced by the National Agency for Research and Development (ANID), as mandated by Law 21,105 of 2018. ANID assumed responsibility for administering the country’s principal research funding programs, including FONDECYT, FONDEF, the Millennium Science Initiative, and doctoral scholarship programs.

ANID channels approximately 60% of Chile’s public science, technology, and innovation budget. The agency operates under the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation (MinCiencia), which became operational in October 2019. According to the UNESCO Science Report, whereas ANID specializes in support for science-based innovation, the Corporation for the Promotion of Production (CORFO) continues to handle non-science-based innovation under the Ministry of the Economy.

For quantum research specifically, ANID inherited a portfolio of more than 300 quantum-related projects funded since 1983 through programs such as FONDECYT and FONDEF, representing cumulative state investment of over 20 billion Chilean pesos.
