On October 10, 2024, Science Minister Aisén Etcheverry presented the report “Recommendations and Challenges for Strengthening the Quantum Ecosystem in Chile” at the Palacio de La Moneda. The report was prepared by the Expert Commission on Quantum Technologies, convened the previous May by the Ministries of Science and the Interior.

The document contained 15 recommendations organized across seven areas: governance and regulation, international collaboration, infrastructure, workforce, education, research and development, and collaboration with the private sector. Key proposals included creating a permanent National Commission on Quantum Technologies, investing in new laboratories, developing talent attraction and retention programs, and establishing competitive funds for quantum research and startups.

According to the ministry’s announcement, Chile has invested over 20 billion pesos (approximately $21 million) in quantum research since 1983 through programs such as FONDECYT and FONDEF, funding more than 300 projects. The report emphasized quantum applications in mining, renewable energy, and cybersecurity as priority sectors. Minister Etcheverry stated that the report would allow Chile “to seize the opportunities offered by these disruptive technologies.”
