On June 7, 2024, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution A/RES/78/287, proclaiming 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ 2025). Ethiopia was among more than 70 countries that co-sponsored the resolution, which was presented by the Ghanaian delegation and adopted by acclamation. The resolution called for activities at all levels to increase public awareness of quantum science and its applications, with UNESCO designated as the lead agency for coordinating the observance.
The UN Digital Library record lists Ethiopia among the additional sponsors alongside Algeria, Angola, Argentina, China, Egypt, Germany, Kenya, the United States, and dozens of other nations. Ghana had formally submitted the draft resolution to the General Assembly at its 78th session in May 2024, building on a prior endorsement by the UNESCO General Conference in November 2023.
Ethiopia’s co-sponsorship placed the country within a broad multilateral coalition spanning both established quantum research nations and developing states. The IYQ 2025 initiative included a focus on building capacity in the Global South and advancing gender equality in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.
