On December 5, 2023, Greece was among the first 11 EU member states to endorse the European Declaration on Quantum Technologies, issued under the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU. The declaration was presented in the presence of European Commissioner for Internal Market Thierry Breton, according to the GRNET announcement.
Alongside France, Belgium, Croatia, Finland, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Malta, Estonia, and Spain, Greece pledged to work with the Commission on coordinating European, national, and regional R&D programs in quantum technologies, accelerating the transition from laboratory to commercial applications, and building pan-European quantum infrastructures including the EuroQCI initiative.
According to the European Commission’s published declaration, signatories recognized the strategic importance of quantum technologies for the EU’s scientific and industrial competitiveness. All EU member states have since signed the declaration. Greece’s Ministry of Digital Governance described the signing as a reaffirmation of Greece’s commitment to quantum technology initiatives.
