In September 2023, the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) launched Hungary’s first Physicist-Engineer BSc degree programme. According to BME, the English-language programme focused on rapidly developing technological areas including quantum and nanotechnology, data science, artificial intelligence, photonics, quantum optics, and materials science.
BME Rector Tibor Czigány stated that the programme would address 21st-century challenges with a focus on nano- and quantum technologies, data science, sustainability, and energetics. Industry partners involved in the programme included Bosch, Semilab, Femtonics, and Furukawa Electric, where students could start as interns during their studies.
At the time of the programme’s launch, Hungarian researchers at BME were already participating in the Quantum Information National Laboratory and the OpenSuperQPlus project. Reports indicated that quantum technology would appear prominently in the new curriculum, with the programme designed to train professionals with both engineering and scientific expertise in response to R&D sector demand.
