On October 3, 2024, the Norwegian government announced an annual allocation of NOK 70 million (approximately USD 6.6 million) for quantum technology research as part of the national state budget. The announcement was made at OsloMet’s Quantum Hub by three government ministers: the Minister of Digitalisation and Public Governance, Karianne Tung; the Minister of Defence, Bjorn Arild Gram; and the Minister of Research and Higher Education, Oddmund Hoel.
According to OsloMet, Minister Hoel described the initiative as a needed response to rapidly increasing opportunities and risks from quantum data processing. Minister Tung stated that quantum technology could contribute to addressing major societal challenges including climate change and new medicines.
Funding was to be managed through competitive calls by the Research Council of Norway, covering quantum computing, quantum sensors, and quantum communication. The commitment marked the first dedicated annual budget line for quantum technology in Norway’s state budget.
