On October 4, 2022, the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) announced the selection of six sites across the EU to host the first EuroHPC quantum computers. Poland’s Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center (PSNC) was selected alongside sites in Czechia, Germany, Spain, France, and Italy, according to the EuroHPC JU announcement.
PSNC, affiliated with the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences, coordinated the EuroQCS-Poland consortium with partners including the Center for Theoretical Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences and Creotech Instruments S.A., a Polish provider of specialized electronics for the quantum market. The planned total investment across all six sites exceeded EUR 100 million, co-funded equally by the EuroHPC JU and participating states.
Each selected site proposed a different quantum technology architecture to provide European users with access to a variety of quantum computing platforms integrated with classical supercomputers. Poland’s consortium proposed a trapped-ion quantum computer to be integrated with existing HPC infrastructure at PSNC via the PIONIER research network.
