In January 2025, Singapore’s Centre for Quantum Technologies (CQT) was formally elevated to a flagship national research centre, a key outcome under the scientific excellence thrust of the National Quantum Strategy, according to a review by the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies.
CQT, originally established in December 2007 as NUS’s first Research Centre of Excellence, now manages research nodes based at A*STAR, NUS, Nanyang Technological University, and the Singapore University of Technology and Design. The elevation was preceded by a S$20 million transition grant received in December 2022 when the original 15-year Research Centre of Excellence scheme ended.
As a national centre, CQT focuses on research in basic science, quantum communication and cryptography, quantum processors and computing, and quantum sensing. NUS remains the host institution, while the expanded structure enables investigator-led research aligned with the country’s Research, Innovation and Enterprise 2025 plan.
