The Egyptian Academy of Scientific Research and Technology (ASRT) and the Meshcheryakov Laboratory of Information Technologies (MLIT) of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) held a Workshop on Quantum Computing and Machine Learning (QCML) in Cairo from October 11 to 14, 2025. According to JINR’s report, the event brought together approximately 120 scientists from Armenia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Georgia, and Russia.
ASRT President Gina El-Feky, who serves as the Plenipotentiary Representative of the Government of Egypt at JINR, co-chaired the organizing committee. She stated that quantum computing is part of Egypt’s strategic development program and that JINR is a long-standing scientific partner of the country.
During the workshop, ASRT held a side meeting on organizing a joint student internship for participants from Egypt and South Africa. National student training programs in quantum computing were planned for January-February 2026, with lecturers from Cairo and Cape Town delivering synchronized curricula. JINR indicated the program would be open to other interested African countries.
