The United Nations General Assembly on June 7, 2024, adopted Resolution A/RES/78/287 proclaiming 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ). The resolution was co-sponsored by more than 70 countries and adopted without objection. Egypt was among the co-sponsoring nations, continuing its role from the earlier UNESCO Executive Board and General Conference phases of the initiative.
Ghana formally submitted the draft resolution to the General Assembly in May 2024. The resolution calls on member states to observe the year through activities aimed at increasing public awareness of the importance of quantum science and its applications. UNESCO was designated as the lead agency for IYQ coordination, working alongside the American Physical Society.
An Egyptian representative, Prof. Ahmed Younes of Alexandria University, was appointed to the IYQ Steering Committee endorsed by UNESCO, serving as the representative of the Arab States.
