Egypt was among 13 countries that requested inclusion of a proposal on the agenda of the 216th session of the UNESCO Executive Board to proclaim 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. According to the UNESCO document 216 EX/37, dated April 14, 2023, the item was placed on the provisional agenda at the request of Brazil, Egypt, Ghana, Japan, Jordan, Kuwait, Mexico, Paraguay, Republic of Korea, Senegal, Serbia, South Africa, and Spain.

The Executive Board endorsed the resolution in May 2023, with 57 countries co-sponsoring. The resolution recommended that the UNESCO General Conference at its 42nd session adopt a resolution forwarding the proposal to the United Nations General Assembly. Egypt’s participation placed it among the original group of nations driving the multilateral quantum science initiative through the UN system.

The 42nd UNESCO General Conference, convening in November 2023, subsequently passed the resolution recommending that the UN General Assembly declare 2025 the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology.
