Metrosert announced its participation in NordicQCI, a cross-border quantum-secured communication network project linking Estonia, Finland, and Sweden. According to Metrosert, the project runs until June 30, 2029, with a total budget of nearly €10 million. It is funded under the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme.

NordicQCI builds on national EuroQCI initiatives implemented between 2023 and 2025 in the three participating countries. Quantum-secured connections will be established between Estonia and Finland, and between Finland and Sweden, using existing terrestrial and submarine fiber-optic cables connecting Tallinn, Helsinki, the Aland Islands, and Stockholm. An Optical Ground Station in Stockholm will integrate the Nordic networks with the EuroQCI Space Segment for testing the Eagle-1 quantum communication satellite.

Coordinated by RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, the consortium includes ten partners. From Estonia, both Metrosert and the State Infocommunication Foundation (RIKS) participate. Mari Aru, Head of Metrosert’s Research and Development Division, said the project enables Metrosert to continue research on testing and validating future quantum-secured communication networks.
