Deputy Minister for Development and Investments Christos Dimas announced on August 31, 2022, during a parliamentary session, that Greece would establish an Institute of Quantum Computing and Quantum Technology at the National Centre of Scientific Research “Demokritos” in Athens. According to Greek Reporter, Dimas told parliament that the institute would produce research applicable across multiple industry sectors and would set up interdisciplinary programs, graduate-school programs, and programs for public administration and business managers.
Dimas said the institute would allow Greece to access European Union funds for quantum technology research, which would directly benefit the national economy. When asked about funding, the deputy minister stated that “to a great degree their funding will come from the Recovery Fund,” referring to Greece’s Recovery and Resilience Plan approved by the EU in 2021.
A second institute, focused on Human Genomics, was simultaneously announced at the Foundation for Research and Technology (FORTH) on Crete. Both were described as the first of their kind in Greece. The Institute of Quantum Computing and Quantum Technology would conduct research in quantum computing and simulation, quantum cryptography, and quantum sensing.
