Hungarian Institutions Join EU OpenSuperQPlus Quantum Computing Project

On March 1, 2023, the OpenSuperQPlus project launched as part of the European Quantum Technology Flagship. According to the Wigner Research Centre for Physics, the project brought together 28 partners from 10 countries, including the key national quantum initiative partners from the Netherlands, France, Finland, Germany, Hungary, and Sweden.

From Hungary, the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) and the Wigner Research Centre for Physics participated, providing theoretical support for quantum computer development. Both institutions contributed to quantum error correction methods, fault-tolerant computing approaches, and software design for quantum computer operation. Research at BME was led by associate professors János Károly Asbóth and András Pályi.

OpenSuperQPlus received EUR 20 million from the EU’s Horizon Europe framework programme. BME’s Faculty of Natural Sciences was allocated EUR 274,000 for the first project phase. The seven-year agenda envisioned development of a 1,000-qubit superconducting quantum computing system, with a 100-qubit system targeted in the initial 3.5-year phase.
