In 2023, Hungary’s National Research, Development and Innovation Office (NKFIH) awarded nearly HUF 3.5 billion (approximately USD 10 million) to the consortium led by the Wigner Research Centre for Physics for continued development of the Quantum Information National Laboratory. According to the HUN-REN Hungarian Research Network, the funding covered a three-year period.

Primary objectives for the new phase included setting up a regional quantum communication network, implementing elementary building blocks of quantum information processing, and developing a local scientific community with cutting-edge knowledge in quantum computing. The consortium also included the Budapest University of Technology and Economics and Eötvös Loránd University.

HUN-REN noted that the national laboratory, originally established in 2020, integrated approximately 15 to 20 internationally recognized Hungarian research groups comprising physicists, engineers, computer scientists, and mathematicians. The renewed funding matched the HUF 3.5 billion originally allocated to the HunQuTech programme in 2018.
