In April 2022, a photonic quantum processor manufactured by the Dutch firm QuiX Quantum arrived at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in Budapest, marking what QuiX described as the first quantum hardware in the Central and Eastern European region. According to QuiX Quantum, the device was purchased jointly by the Faculties of Science and of Informatics of ELTE under the Quantum Information National Laboratory initiative.

ELTE intended to use the QuiX chip for academic research into photonic quantum computing. QuiX CTO Jelmer Renema stated that the company’s processors were operating in Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and now Hungary.

Researchers at ELTE subsequently used the processor for several projects. A noise reduction method developed by Hungarian experts using the device was published in the international journal Quantum, offering a way to run quantum programmes with fewer quantum logic operations than previously published methods.
