Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) announced the Indonesian Quantum Initiative (IQI) in late 2024, according to a report in The Jakarta Post published on October 6, 2024. The initiative was described as a program to help policymakers establish infrastructure and ecosystems in education, research, development, and the application of quantum technology across the archipelago.

At the time of the announcement, several Indonesian universities were also building quantum capacity. The Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) had introduced one of the country’s first quantum computers, and the November 10 Institute of Technology (ITS) had previously launched its Quantum Computing and Information Group. IQI brings together faculty from ITB, ITS, Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), and the University of Indonesia (UI) in collaboration with BRIN researchers.

Yudi Darma, Director of Science and Technology Dissemination at the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, was among the physicists who helped launch IQI. In an October 2025 event covered by Antara News, Darma noted that no Indonesian university had yet established a dedicated quantum physics study program, contrasting Indonesia’s position with countries such as Singapore and Thailand.
