On December 17, 2025, the Norwegian government announced the award of four new national quantum technology research centres. The Research Council of Norway had announced the call in May 2025, covering the three pillars of quantum communication, quantum computing, and quantum sensing. Each centre may receive up to NOK 61 million in funding, according to the Research Council.
Simula Research Laboratory was awarded two of the four centres, with a combined budget of approximately NOK 120 million over five years. These are the Norwegian Quantum Software Center (NorQSoft), led by Shaukat Ali of Simula, and the Centre for Quantum Communication Networks and Applications (QCNA), led by Carlos Cid of Simula UiB, according to Simula. QCNA partners include SINTEF Digital, NTNU, Telenor, and Toshiba Europe.
A third centre, the Centre for Quantum Computing and Applications (QSTAR), is hosted by SINTEF and led by Franz Fuchs. It focuses on error correction, algorithms, and software for reliable quantum computation. The centres will train PhD students and postdoctoral researchers and contribute to university courses and professional upskilling programs.
