The Gemini Center on Quantum Computing, originally established in 2020 by SINTEF, NTNU, and the University of Oslo, was reappointed for the period 2024 to 2028. The renewal was announced in November 2024, according to SINTEF.

As part of its renewal, the center expanded its scope beyond quantum computing to include quantum sensors and materials, as well as quantum communication and security. The renamed Gemini Center for Quantum Technology held a formal kick-off in early 2025, bringing together researchers from across its partner institutions.

SINTEF Digital Executive Vice President Trond Runar Hagen stated that the center would work to ensure Norway is prepared when quantum technology matures. The center had already achieved results through Research Council of Norway-funded projects including Qombine and NeQst, as well as a collaboration with the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment through the QC4DS project.
